All Saints Day
On November 1st Guatemala celebrates the All Saints Day.
This is a day when loved ones that have passed away are remembered with different cultural and family traditions.
During this day, families visit cemeteries to clean up and place decorations on the tombs of their loved ones. Decorations include flowers like marigolds, candles and colorful offerings.
There are different cultural activities related to this holiday, like the flight of giant kites, some of them can be as big as 20 meters and are crafted by local artisans with spiritual decorations like messages or images.
When it comes to food, Fiambre is the most representative meal.
For Guatemala, this date is a combination of respect, remembrance and reflection that brings family together.

The 10th Edition of the Flower Festival will be celebrated on November 14 and 15.
The Festival includes different activities under the motto “Ciudad Floreciente” (Flourishing City), which highlights how Antigua continues to bloom and thrive thanks to its history, architecture, along with the hands of locals and visitors.
The opening event is a parade on November 13 called “Inicia la Primavera” (Spring Begins).
During the weekend, visitors can admire many commemorative gardens that bring the city to life with their colors and creative designs displayed in the main streets of Antigua Guatemala. You can also enjoy many different activities like a Flower Market, workshops, artistic performances, music, dance, and poetry.

Guatemalan Indigenous People’s Day
On August 9th, Guatemala observes the International Day of Indigenous People, which serves to acknowledge and protect the rights, cultural diversity and territory of native communities worldwide.
In Guatemala this day honors and brings visibility to the historic struggle of the Maya, Xinka, Garífuna, and Ladino people. Guatemala has the highest indigenous population in Central America with 43% of its total population.
This day serves to remind us that Guatemala’s wealth lies in its diversity.

Guatemala’s Independence Day
On September 15, Guatemala celebrates its Independence Day, which commemorates the historical events from 1821.
On September 15 of 1821, the Centralamercian Independance Act was signed, this was part of a social and political process that took several years. Back then the region was under Spanish rule.
During this holiday Guatemala dresses in blue and white to celebrate, the streets are adorned with the Guatemalan flag, schools organize civics acts and many other celebratory activities are planned across the country.

In Guatemala, Children’s Day is celebrated on October 1st, the date was established officially in 1975 as a result of the recommendation of the United Nations to promote Children’s rights but its start dates back to 1924.
In Guatemala children are celebrated by their families, schools or communities with piñatas, games and different activities to bring joy to them.
More than a celebration, the date is also an important reminder to safeguard Children’s rights like education, health and protection.

Commemoration of the 1944 Revolution
On October 20, Guatemala celebrates the Revolution Anniversary, marking the historical events from 1944.
This commemorates a civic and military uprising that included the participation of the army, students and workers to overthrow the oppressive government of Federico Ponce Vaides. This emerged as a response to political repression, precarious working conditions, and the concentration of land inherited from the colonial era that started with former President Jorge Ubico in 1933.
With this revolution a democratic process was started in Guatemala leading to the first free elections, it also marked the beginning of political, social and economic modernization that is now known as the “Ten Years of Spring”.
For Guatemala, this celebration represents a victory for its people against political repression and social injustice.
